The Langkawi Longitudinal Study (LLS) is a prospective cohort study conducted by the Institute for Public Health, MOH, among pregnant women and children in Langkawi, Kedah, starting in March 2025. Pregnant women in the first trimester of pregnancy will be followed up until they give birth. Once the child is born, the infant will be followed up until the child is 2 years old.

This study aims to gather information on factors influencing children's growth in their first 1000 days of life in Malaysia, from conception until they reach two years old. The findings of this study will provide the Ministry of Health Malaysia with crucial information to improve the health of women, pregnant mothers and children in the country.

The Institute for Public Health is conducting this study in collaboration with the Langkawi District Health Department and Hospital Sultanah Maliha, Langkawi. The study participants will consist of 1,000 mother-child pairs receiving antenatal care and child follow-up services at government Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Clinics in Langkawi.

LLS 2025-2028 is a prospective cohort study conducted by Institute for Public Health, MOH among pregnant women and children in Langkawi, Kedah from 2025 until 2028. Pregnant women in first trimester of pregnancy will be followed up until they give birth. Once the child is born, the infant will be followed up until he/she is two years old.

This study aims to gather information on the factors influencing the growth of children in their first 1000 days of life; which is from conception until they reach two years old in Malaysia. The findings of this study will provide the Ministry of Health Malaysia with crucial information to improve the health of women, pregnant mothers and children in the country.

THE ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED DURING THE SURVEY

 

Face-to-face interview sessions will be conducted in the MCH clinics by trained data collectors using mobile devices containing the study questionnaire. The duration of the interview session is approximately 30-45 minutes. Besides that, there will be other activities conducted including:

What does ‘The First 1000 Days of Life’ mean?

The First 1000 Days of life refers to the period starting from conception (the mother's pregnancy) until the child's second birthday (24 months or 2 years old).

What is ‘The First 1000 Days of Life: Langkawi Longitudinal Study’ (LLS)?

The LLS is a prospective cohort study initiated by the Ministry of Health Malaysia. It involves 1,000 pregnant women from Langkawi, Kedah, starting in 2025. Participants will be monitored throughout their pregnancies until childbirth. After birth, the infants will be followed up and observed until they reach two years of age

What is the aim of this study?

This study aims to obtain information on factors associated with a child's growth from pregnancy until the age of two in Malaysia. The information obtained will be reviewed and evaluated to improve the health condition of pregnant women, women of reproductive age and children in our country

When does the data collection start?

The data collection for this study will start in March 2025.

What is the significance of my participation and commitment in this study?

The information provided by you and other respondents to this study is crucial. The Ministry of Health will use it to evaluate current maternal and child health-related programmes and policies in the country. It will also facilitate the planning of new maternal and child health-related programs in Malaysia.

What are the outcomes of this health census?
  • Data and reports will be disseminated to stakeholders for monitoring purposes.
  • The results of this study will be documented in the form of technical reports, fact sheets, research papers, infographics and presentations.

Why are the ‘First 1000 Days of Life’ important?

 

This period is crucial because the brain and body undergo rapid growth and development. Proper nutrition, healthcare and a nurturing environment during this time can prevent malnutrition, developmental delays and long-term health issues such as obesity, diabetes and mental health problems.

Who is involved in this study?

Pregnant mothers in the first trimester of pregnancy (≤12 weeks of pregnancy) receiving antenatal care in the government’s health clinics.

How is the data collected for this study?

The data will be collected over 11 visits; three during each trimester of pregnancy, one at delivery and seven post-delivery in their respective clinics when the mothers and their children come for their scheduled checkups. 

What activities are carried out during the data collection?

Face-to-face interviews will be conducted in the clinics by trained data collectors using mobile devices with the study questionnaire. The interview session lasts approximately 30-40 minutes. Besides that, there will be other activities conducted 

including:

  • Anthropometric assessment
  • Self-administered questionnaire
  • Telephone interview
  • Dietary intake assessment
  • Blood investigation
If I am busy or unavailable for the scheduled follow-up data collection session, what can I do?

Your participation in this study is voluntary, and the data collection session will be conducted only with your consent at your convenience, on your preferred day. When the data collection team contacts you to schedule an appointment, you can reschedule the session at your convenience. 

Will the obtained information be kept confidential?

All information obtained in this study will be securely stored and handled in accordance with relevant regulations and/or laws. All information will only be used for this study purpose, and the identities of the respondents participating will not be disclosed.
